Towers is popular, but he's staying put

SAN DIEGO ---- The Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers will have to look elsewhere for their next general manager.Padres GM Kevin Towers on Thursday removed himself from consideration for both jobs and reiterated his intention to serve out his contract, which runs through the 2007 season.
"I'm glad it's behind me," Towers said. "I'm a loyal person. I hated having my face out there for every job that was coming up. It started bothering me."
Since Theo Epstein resigned as Red Sox GM on Monday, heavy speculation had pointed to Towers as a possible replacement in Boston, where he would have been reunited with former Padres president Larry Lucchino. The Red Sox, however, never requested permission to speak with Towers. The Dodgers, who fired Paul DePodesta on Saturday, did seek an interview through Padres CEO Sandy Alderson, but Towers told Alderson on Thursday morning that he wasn't interested. The recent round of attention on Towers comes after he interviewed for the GM opening in Arizona two weeks ago. The Diamondbacks eventually chose Boston assistant GM Josh Byrnes over Towers and other candidates."I learned a lot by going to Arizona," Towers said. "It helped me come to grips with the things that are important to me. Sometimes money and years aren't the most important things in life. I came to realize that I have it pretty good here."The last four or five days, the speculation out there was crazy. It got to the point where it needed to stop. I took a long walk this morning and decided this is where I want to be."Alderson was pleased to hear of Towers' decision."I think Kevin is critical to our baseball operations," Alderson said. "I think going into next season, we're going to have as strong a baseball operations staff as any team in the league."
